A Batik Enrichment programme was organised for the Sec 2E students from February 13 to 30 April by the Malay Department. The five sessions lasting two hours each were conducted after school on Wednesday. The objectives of this programme are to enhance the students’ awareness and understanding of Malay traditional arts and to let them experience what they have learnt about Batik in the Malay textbook. It was also a good opportunity to showcase their talents. It was a fun and fulfiling activity as the students learn the different types of batik. They were also taught how to trace pictures drawn by them using the canting and coloured them using dyes later on. They really enjoyed themselves despite the fact that they have to stay back for two hours after a long day in school. These students were then appointed as ‘Batik Ambassadors’ who will be teaching and guiding the Wuhan students in Batik painting in May. |

The trip to Pelenggong, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca was such a memorable one. It took place from the 24th May to 27th May 2008. There were a total of 33 Ping Yians and 3 accompanying teachers. It was very heart-warming to be treated so well by the ‘kampung’ people and our host families. The homestay experience at Pelenggong was indeed an experience I will never forget. I had never seen such strong bonding among the ‘kampung’ residents unlike in Singapore where sometimes we do not even know or acknowledge our own neighbours. Even though the ‘kampung’ people were busy with their daily activities, they never fail to make us feel at home. During this homestay, I have experienced a few interesting things like learning how to weave a basket and also learned a traditional dance called ‘joget pinang’ and learned to play a traditional musical instrument called ’caklempong’. In Malacca, I had a chance to visit Malacca Museum and a delicious dinner of ‘Ikan Bakar’. All in all, the trip had taught me more about my Malay culture and heritage and also learn to adapt well to kampung life . This was a trip worth going! Nursyahira Bte Azman (Sec 303) |
