Teaching and Learning The department implements the Structured Teaching Packages (STP) for all Humanities subjects. A STP consists of the following: This initiative benefits the department in the following ways: - It facilitates team teaching and increase competency of teacher.
- It gives clear direction on teaching and assessment.
- Lesson schedule encourages pupils to prepare for lessons ahead of time, hence encouraging independent learning
Learning Centres NE Gallery The department has established a learning centre at Level 3 of the Fuji Block. This is a NE gallery showcasing the contribution of the pioneers of Singapore. Pupils are also exposed to the works of important personalities like our Presidents and Prime Ministers of Singapore. In addition, pupils are also exposed to the progress and achievements of Singapore from the 1960s to present day Singapore NE Corridor The corridor along levels 2 , 3 and 4 of the Kinabalu Block will showcase a series of NE cum Social Studies posters to infuse NE values and messages as well as reinforce salient points on the issues covered in Social Studies. • Lecture and Tutorial System The Humanities Department implemented a Lecture and Tutorial system for Social Studies this year for the upper secondary students. The aim is to expose our students to the varied teaching styles of different teachers and introduce them to the learning environment of the junior colleges and the polytechnics.Under this system, students are banded for lectures and subsequently split into their classes for tutorials to discuss tutorial worksheets under assigned teachers. This method also enables teachers to cover basic content faster. • Hydroponics Aim The hydroponics programme is an innovation plan to enable the pupils of Ping Yi to experience a small form of market gardening and to challenge each of the participants in the project to come up with spin-off innovative and enterprising venture relating to hydroponics. The Hydroponics Committee seeks to impart the training for the cultivation and eventually the sale of related products using SAIL to track their progress and measure the level of achievement attained. Active and independent learning in the participants are promoted as pupils learn to master life skills in cultivation and put on their thinking hats to grow their innovative ideas into results.
The Ping Yi Hydroponics Desired Outcomes This programme seeks to achieve the following: • Establish Hydroponics as a learning package fostering entrepreneurship and small business acumen • Teach skills for the cultivation and sale of the green leafy vegetables using SAIL • Spur staff and pupils towards an innovative and enterprising mindset, well-equipped to generate spin-off possibilities
• Build an innovative culture geared towards achieving breakthrough and radical changes in the pursuit of progress and excellence. • Enrichment Programmes History Workshop A three-hour History Workshop is organised for Secondary one pupils to enhance their skills in answering source-based questions. The workshop aims at growing pupils in the following areas: - Recognising History as a challenging and interesting field of studies
- Enriching the learning experience
- Mastering essential skills for Source Based Questions
Sec 1 History Workshop, 1st Feb 2007 A Secondary 1 History Workshop (Archaeology Trail 2007) was held on 1st Feb 2007. This three-hour enrichment programme is organised to help students to master essential skills for answering Source Based Questions: and also to allow them to see that. History is a challenging and interesting field of studies! During the Workshop, the students took up the role as an archaeologist and were given the task to excavate the Terracotta figurines and to locate ancient artifacts! All in all, this was indeed an enriching learning experience and the Ping Yians enjoyed themselves!

Secondary Two pupils are given priority to experience living among the hill tribes and working in a padi field. The homestay in Thai villages and immersion in Thai culture and tradition will indeed be an enriching experience that should not be missed.
Principles of Accounts Computerised Accounting software Interested students from Sec 4E and 5N will be taught an accounts software, MYOB. This will help them to appreciate the application of IT to accounting. It will also prepare them to meet the requirements of the industry.
Intensive-exam Preparation An external vendor will be engaged to conduct an intensive-exam preparation course for interested students (Sec 4E and 5N) in July/August.
Accounting Board Game The students were introduced to an Accounting Board Game designed by ITE. This board game helps students to practise their book keeping in a fun way.
