The Earliest Chinese Primary School in Kampong Chai Chee

Pin Ghee Public School was first founded by the villagers of Kampong Chai Chee even before the second World War, in 1934. The objective then was to provide normal education at a place conducive and convenient for the children in the villages.

Mr Poh Chee Siew, age 74, was among the first batch of students of Pin Ghee Public School. He recalled, in a recent interview, that when the school was first started, there were only two classes. One was for children who were completely illiterate, while the other was for those who already had some basic proficiency. Mr Poh's class was the latter as he had studied in a private school before.

At that time, there were very few pupils who managed to complete their primary education since most of them were required to work in the farms when they were older. Mr Poh too, was forced to leave school when he was in Primary 5. In the early days there were no girls at all in Pin Ghee. This was partly due to the fact that the villagers were rather conservative at that time. Moreover, most of them could not afford to send their daughters to school, after paying for the boys' education. Hence, most of the girls would usually stay at home and help with the household chores until they got married.

During the Japanese Occupation, Pin Ghee Public School was closed down completely. After the war, the school was re-opened. Although the school was still built with wood and attap, it was already quite a large school with a principal, discipline master and a few subject teachers. From then, Ping Yi expanded rapidly and at one time, it had an enrolment of more than 1 ,OOO pupils.
