Welcome to Ping Yi Secondary School’s website! Newsletter 2010
We started the year with the theme “Embracing Change, Realizing Potential” and how apt it has been! 2010 is a year that will be etched in the annals of Ping Yi’s history as a year where, as a school, we set our sights high, scaled new heights of excellence and celebrated several firsts!
Our holistic approach to student development was well affirmed through national recognition in Character Development, National Education and Cherish (Championing Efforts Resulting in School Health). Our Display Band clinched the Gold Award for the SYF competition, while our Cricket, Sepak Takraw and Tchoukball teams did us proud by winning at national and zonal competitions. Through all this, Ping Yians displayed desired character traits like, resilience, tenacity, an appreciation for one another’s strengths, team spirit and sportsmanship. This orientation towards excellence is what we aim to imbue in all our students and I am pleased to say, we are well on our way!
In the academic front, we have also exceeded expectations with our express cohort achieving a better than expected results with an improvement of 3 bands from the expected performance. We are on our way to being recognized with a Value Added Award at the end of this year.
Our school is of course, more than these accolades. To make school life meaningful and fun, at Ping Yi we adopt an ability driven, learner-centred, integrated approach in the delivery of our curriculum. One good example is our annual Integrated Programme Week, where normal lessons are suspended as we make the learning experience authentic and exciting. This year our students visited the BodyWorlds exhibition, toured the Civic District, trekked up the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, took a MRT train ride to study the Art in the stations, went camping and the list just goes on. There was no doubt that they were incredibly enriched by the entire experience and enjoyed every moment.
We, at Ping Yi, are constantly looking for ways of catering to the varied needs of our students. We have partnered polytechnics and have introduced Advanced Elective Modules to further enhance the learning experience of our students through practice-oriented approaches. It will provide students who are keen to progress along an applied path of education the opportunities to discover their strengths and interests. Our Sec 3 Normal Technical students are currently involved in Elective Modules such as Hair Styling, Cooking and Hospitality that goes beyond the normal mandatory hours and leads to recognized certification.
Ping Yians are also moving towards being global citizens and handling the changing landscape of the 21st century with confidence. They are encouraged to have an international outlook and be comfortable and confident in interacting with nationals from other countries; to be culturally versatile, but confident of their own identity. Twinning programmes with top schools in China, India and Hong Kong, experiential learning journeys to Australia, Malaysia and international competitions are but some examples of the rich opportunities our students have to see the world.
To provide a conducive teaching and learning environment several physical facilities were added and enhanced recently. The Palm Cove Lounge our very own student recreation centre went through an extension with an outdoor drop in area as we had a happy problem of too many students wanting to hang out there. The Butterfly Garden and Eco Pond provides a rich and rejuvenating learning environment. The Indoor Sports Hall has enabled physical activities to be conducted throughout the day.
Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist, an influential thinker and the founder of analytical psychology said “One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, the warmth is the vital element for the soul of the child.” Being a Restorative Practice (RP) school, we spend significant time and effort to build positive relationships with our students. The staff at Ping Yi have been exemplary in their dedication, commitment and effort in ensuring that our students academic, moral, social and emotional needs are well taken care of.
As we move ahead with confidence, let us bring to reality the phrase in our school song,
“From each our very best we give, Success along the way…”
There is indeed great potential that resides within each of us and we can strive and make it to even greater heights!
