2012 Welcome Note from

Rendell Tan, PSG Exco Chairman

Let me begin with a story.  Two master monks and a junior monk were on their boat on a quiet day.  Their boat was anchored near a remote island in the lake.  After a while, the master monk stood up, focused on the island, and said, “I will go the island to get us some fruits”.  To the junior monk’s surprise, the master monk stepped onto the lake and walked on the water to the island.  The master monk climbed up the tree with ease, plucked out many fruits and tucked them in his basket and immediately walked on the water back to the boat. “Let’s eat” he said.  All this time, the young boy monk watched in wide eyed wonder. “Oh, what great faith, my master monk has”.

After an hour, the monks were hungry again – and this time the 2nd master monk did the same thing.  Got up, focused on the island, (chomp chomp...) walked on the water to the island, collected the fruits and walked back again.  Again the young boy monk watched in wide eyed wonder. “Oh, what great faith, my master monk has”.

All was quiet again.  The boy monk was thinking hard.... “I have the focus. I have the faith.  Surely, I too can walk on water just like my master monks did”.  To the surprise and shock of the master monks, the boy stood up, focused on the island and boldly stepped out of the boat onto the water.  Immediately, the little boy plunged deep into the cold lake.  The master monks were quick to pull the boy out.  Spluttering and shivering, the boy said , “Oh, masters....i had the focus, I had the faith...why couldn’t I walk on the waters?”

The master monk stood up and a smile spread across his face, filled with wisdom.  “Yes, you must have the focus.  You must have the faith.  But....(he paused and look upon the waters)...you must know where the rocks are...”

Dear Parents,  we in PSG – Parents Support Group – are also parents.   Like you, our children study in Ping Yi.  Like you,  we are also concerned about how will our children fit into a new school environment, new teachers, new friends and new syllabus.  As parents, we do have the focus.  We do have the faith.  But as the story goes,  we need to know where the rocks are.   These are rocks are the challenges in life such as parent-child relationship,  teenage challenges, school challenges...

We need to seek advice and help from each other.     We need to help our children succeed in life and in school.   No parent can work alone and succeed.  We can help each other.  And that is why  joining  the Parents Support Group can help you and me.

There are many benefits I have enjoyed from being in PSG.   I like to just highlight three.

One.  You get to know the school’s calendar and events involving your child – which comes from PSG meetings with the Principal monthly.  With this information, you can be better prepared to help your child on be ready for the events ahead.  It’s like having a map, so you can plan better.

Two.  You get to meet the Principal Mdm Shanti, her HODs and your child’s teachers.  You have a chance to ask questions, enquire how your child is doing and get your suggestions implemented.  You can help make a BIG difference to your child’s education.

Three.   You are building a bond with your child that will last a life time.  Marks are important. But marks on your child’s exam papers will fade away.  But your commitment and presence in PSG will form a lasting mark on your child’s precious memories.    There will be outing opportunities, family bonding activities and school events involvement.   You are setting an example for your child.  Because you care enough to give.

Some of you are interested, but concerned.  How much time needed?   What skills are needed?

All we ask is a willing heart and willing hands.  If you have 2 to 3 hours a month, or 2 to 3 hours in a year – we have a place for you in PSG.   Just say Yes, and we can tell you more.  You have been given a green form.  Please fill in your contact details and return the form to any of the PSG volunteers.  Also please visit our PSG room at the Palm Cove, which is to your right when you enter the main gate.

In closing, you don’t have to journey alone.   There may be times when like me, you will fall into the water, feeling frustrated and helpless.  The PSG are fellow parents who will help you.  You will also be able to help other parents – and this is done through sharing and learning from each other.

Just say Yes!

Yes, I want to be there for my child!

Yes, I want to build a stronger bond with my child!

Yes, I want to help my child succeed!

Together – we shall find out where the rocks are, and together we shall pick the fruits of our success in helping our children in their Ping Yi journey.

Thank You.
